As you have learned, the Past Tense is used with situations or events
that occurred in the past time. The Present Perfect is connected to
the past time; but, more importantly, it is concerned with the
effect of the past on the present.
Compare the examples below.
I was a girl.
I have been a woman for several years. In fact, I have been a
woman since 2013.
In the first example, it is clear that Miley is no longer a girl.
The past is the past and is not relevant to the present time.
However, although Miley became an adult woman in 2013 (the past),
she is still an adult woman in the present time. The past is relevant
in the present time.
